Little Escape

Amsterdam

After a couple of really busy weeks, me and 2 girl friends were desperate to spend a weekend away from Brussels... Therefore, we booked a weekend in Amsterdam! We rented an amazing apartment through Airbnb and we couldn't be happier, it was really lovely! Nice decoration, a beautiful garden... The apartment is located near Olympiaplein, a very quiet and pretty area, with supermarkets, bakeries and public transport nearby. It's more in the south of Amsterdam but with such a nice weather and shinning sun, we decided to walk instead of getting into trams. This way we managed to see everything better!

Depois de umas semanas bem ocupadas, eu e mais duas amigas estávamos desesperadas por passar um fim-de-semana fora de Bruxelas... Por isso, reservámos um fim-de-semana em Amesterdão! Alugámos um apartamento fantástico através do site Airbnb e não podíamos ter ficado mais satisfeitas, era mesmo bonito! Decoração maravilhosa, um jardim lindíssimo... O apartamento está localizado perto de Olympiaplein, uma zona bastante calma e bonita, com supermercados, padarias e perto dos transportes públicos. Fica mais no sul de Amesterdão mas com um tempo tão agradável e o sol a brilhar, decidimos andar em vez de ir no eléctrico. Assim pudemos ver tudo muito melhor!

We walked all the way up to Albert Cuypstraat, a long street where the Europe's biggest street market happens 6 days a week. They sell all sorts of products, from vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, clothes and their famous Dutch Stroopwafels - a waffle made from two thin layers of baked dough with a sort of caramel syrup in the middle. We bought one to share between the 3 of us, it was so delicious! In this street, there are also loads of ethnic restaurants, cute cafes and bars behind the market stalls.

Andámos todo o caminho até chegarmos à Albert Cuypstraat, uma rua enorme onde o maior mercado de rua da Europa acontece 6 vezes por semana. Eles vendem todo o tipo de produtos, desde legumes a frutas, peixe, carne, roupa e as famosas Stroopwafels Holandesas - waffles feitas a partir de duas finas camadas de massa cozida com um recheio de caramelo líquido! Comprámos uma para dividir pelas três, estava deliciosa! Nesta rua, por trás das bancadas do mercado, há também imensos restaurantes étnicos, cafés amorosos e bares.

After going till end of the market, we went back and we took the Ferdinand Bolstraat that leads us straight to Vijzelstraat and the centre of Amsterdam. In this street we can find the Heineken Experience building, the cool neighbourhood De Pijp, loads of bars, fashion and home decor shops and cafes. In Vijzelstraat, another long avenue with lovely shops, we stopped for lunch at a tiny and cosy place called Juice & Salad. The name says it all, they have a huge variety of homemade fruit and vegetable juices, salads and sandwiches. They also have a soup of the day, and that day it was a delicious pumpkin soup, embellished with goat cheese and seeds of top. The sun started to hide, so that warm soup was the perfect break!

Depois de irmos até o final do mercado, voltámos para trás e tomámos a rua Ferdinand Bolstraat que nos leva directamente à Vikzelstraat e ao centro de Amesterdão. Nesta rua encontramos o edifício da Heineken Experience, um bairro muito fixe chamado De Pijp, imensos bares, lojas de moda, decoração e cafés. Na Vijzelstraat, outra longa avenida com imensas lojas e cafés, parámos para almoçar num pequeno e acolhedor restaurante chamado Juice & Salad. Como o nome indica, eles têm uma enorme variedade sumos de frutas e vegetais caseiros, saladas e sanduíches. Têm também a sopa do dia e naquele dia foi uma deliciosa sopa de abóbora, decorada com queijo de cabra e sementes por cima. O sol começou a esconder-se, por isso aquela sopa quente foi a pausa perfeita! 

After lunch, we kept walking and we arrived right in the middle of Muntplein. Then we started taking the little streets on the left to walk around the famous Nine Streets and the lovely canals of Amsterdam. It's such a nice area, so lively! It's very nice to spend some time there because there's so much to see: museums, more beautiful independent shops, cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, flower markets. It was a nice walk and for dinner, we went to a cute place called Venkel. They have a big variety of salads that they prepare in the moment, everything so healthy, and the place itself is gorgeous inside!

Depois de almoço, continuámos a andar e chegámos mesmo ao centro da Muntplein. Aí, seguimos pelas pequenas ruas à esquerda para irmos passear nas famosas Nine Streets e nos maravilhosos canais de Amesterdão. É uma zona tão bonita, cheia de vida! É muito bom passar algum tempo ali porque há tanta coisa para ver: museus, mais lojas independentes lindíssimas, cafés, restaurantes, coffee shops, mercados de flores. Foi um passeio muito agradável e para jantar fomos a um sítio muito giro chamado Venkel. Eles têm uma enorme variedade de saladas que preparam no momento, tudo tão saudável, e o sítio em si é fantástico!

Sunday

Sunday, and still very tired from the day before, we left the apartment with our suitcases and we went to one of the main parks in the city, Vondelpark. It's beautiful, very big and busy, with lots of people running, cycling, friends, couples, families. We sat in the terrace of a restaurant right in the park where we had lunch. I ate a delicious sandwich with tuna salad, lentils, lettuce and red onions, along with a bowl of yummy fries! We spent quite a while there, just enjoying the nice view and chatting.

Domingo, e ainda cansadas do dia anterior, saímos do apartamento com as nossas malas de viagem e fomos até um dos principais parques da cidade, chamado Vondelpark. É lindíssimo, muito grande e bastante movimentado. Muita gente a correr, a andar de bicicleta, amigos, casais, famílias. Sentámo-nos na esplanada do restaurante do parque onde almoçámos. Eu comi uma deliciosa sanduíche de salada de atum com lentilhas, alface e cebola, juntamente com uma taça de batatas fritas fantásticas! Passámos ali algum tempo, a aproveitar a bonita vista do parque e a conversar. 

When we left the park, we walked to the Museumplein, a huge square where they have different types of museums and where you can find the IAmsterdam sign. Obviously everyone wants to take a picture there, so it was impossible to take a picture of the sign by itself, with no one around. We relaxed a bit, checking nice photography books in the shop of one of the museums before we head back to the street Ceintuurbaan. I wanted to go to this street to check one restaurant that I've read about last week, called Sla. We found it but unfortunately we had no more time left, we had to take our tram back to the Bus Station. Still, I managed to take some pictures of the place, it really is gorgeous! If I go back to Amsterdam someday, I must go there!

Quando saímos do parque, caminhámos até Museumplein, uma praça enorme onde eles reuniram diferentes tipos de museus e onde se pode encontrar as famosas letras a dizer IAmsterdam. Obviamente, toda a gente quer tirar uma foto ali, por isso foi impossível tirar uma foto apenas às letras, sem ninguém à volta. Relaxámos um pouco e folheámos uns livros de fotografia fantásticos na loja de um dos Museus, antes de voltarmos para a rua Ceintuurbaan. Eu queria ir a esta rua porque queria ver um restaurante sobre o qual tinha lido na semana anterior, chamado Sla. Encontrámo-lo mas infelizmente não tínhamos tempo suficiente, pois tivemos de ir apanhar o eléctrico de volta para a Estação dos Autocarros. Ainda assim, consegui tirar umas fotografias ao espaço, é mesmo bonito! Se voltar algum dia a Amesterdão, tenho de lá ir!

And that was it, our little escape to Amsterdam! I had such a lovely time with my friends, we saw so many things! Sometimes it's nice to go away for a couple of days, discover new things, collect nice memories and souvenirs of our little trips. This weekend I must rest, because next week I will go to London for 4 days, to spend a few days with some friends I have there, so it's gonna be another awesome weekend, for sure. It's actually the last time I will have a weekend away before I go back to Portugal for Christmas holidays! So I can't wait!

E foi assim, a nossa pequena escapadela para Amesterdão! Foi óptimo passar tempo com as minhas amigas, vimos tantas coisas! às vezes, é bom sair daqui por uns dias, descobrir novas coisas, coleccionar memórias e lembranças das pequenas viagens que vamos fazendo. Este fim-de-semana tenho de descansar, porque na próxima semana vou para Londres, passar 4 dias com amigas que estão por lá, por isso vai ser fantástico, sem dúvida! É, de facto, o último fim-de-semana que vou ter fora de Bruxelas, antes de voltar para Portugal para as férias de Natal! Por isso, mal posso esperar!
