Hallo Berlin!

Let's go somewhere new!

This Thursday was a bank holiday here in Brussels, and we also didn't work on Friday, so everyone decided to head home for the long weekend. Me and my friend Dani had the idea of going somewhere new, so a few weeks back we decided to go to Berlin! With our flights booked and a room in a gorgeous house (found through airbnb), we headed to Berlin! We stayed in Weserstraße, a really cool and lively street, in Kreuzkölln,  also known as Reuterkiez, which is the northern part of the Neukölln neighborhood, on the border with Kreuzberg. It's a real cool street, filled with cosy cafes, cool bars and restaurants, worth to explore! On Friday morning, we had breakfast in K-Fetisch, a cute cafe in the same area, and after a delicious banana bread we went to the metro to visit Berlin!

Esta quinta-feira foi feriado aqui em Bruxelas, e também não trabalhámos na sexta-feira, por isso toda a gente decidiu ir a casa neste fim-de-semana longo. Eu e a minha amiga Dani pensámos ir a um sítio novo, por isso há algumas semanas atrás decidimos ir a Berlim! Com os voos reservados e um quarto numa casa lindíssima (que encontrámos através do airbnb), fomos para Berlim! Ficámos na Weserstraße, uma rua muito fixe e animada, em Kreuzkölln, também conhecida como Reuterkiez, que é a zona norte do bairro Neukölln, na fronteira com Kreuzberg. É uma rua mesmo porreira, cheia de cafés giros, bares e restaurantes muito fixes, vale a pena explorar! Na sexta-feira de manhã, tomámos o pequeno-almoço no K-Fetisch, um café giro na mesma zona, e depois de um delicioso "banana bread", apanhámos o metro para visitar Berlim!

Mitte

Arriving to Alexanderplatz, the huge public square, we got ourselves a map of the city, focusing on the Mitte area and we went for a long walk around the centre of Berlin! Mitte is the most central area of Berlin, really nice for shopping, very trendy restaurants, cafes, and where all the main sights of Berlin are located. Going through all the little streets in the area, we found beautiful shops with hidden treasures, vintage pieces, beautiful garments, unique accessories and cool design items! After walking for hours, we went randomly to a tiny restaurant in Kastanienallee, called Habba Habba, a very friendly and cheap place, where we ate a fantastic hummus and delicious wraps! It was super quick, we were super happy with the food, and it gave us enough energy to continue our adventure!

Ao chegar a Alexanderplatz, uma enorme praça pública, arranjámos um mapa da cidade, que se focava na zona do Mitte, e demos uma longa caminhada em torno do centro de Berlim. Mitte é a zona mais central da cidade, muito boa para compras, com restaurantes e cafés porreiros, e onde podemos encontrar todos os pontos turísticos de Berlim. Andando por entre as pequenas ruas desta zona, encontrámos lojas lindas com tesouros escondidos, peças vintage, roupas lindíssimas, acessórios únicos e peças de design muito fixes! Depois de andarmos durante horas, fomos aleatoriamente a um pequeno restaurante em Kastanienallee, chamado Habba Habba, um sítio muito amigável e barato, onde comemos um hummus fantástico e wraps deliciosos! Foi super rápido e ficámos muito contentes com a comida, que nos deu energia suficiente para continuarmos a nossa aventura!

Sightseeing

After walking around the Mitte and shopping nice things, we went back to Alexanderplatz to see some of the main sights of Berlin. We walked all the street Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, that connects with the boulevard Unter den Linden, and we managed to see the beautiful Cathedral ("Berliner Dom" in German), and the huge park next to it - Lustgarten - which of course was super crowded, afterall the weather was amazing! We kept walking and we reached Brandenburger Tor, the city gate and one of the most well-known landmarks of Germany! Next to it, we found the Holocaust Memorial (or Monument to the Murdered Jews in Europe). We headed to the Museum Martin Gropius Bau, which currently holds an exhibition of Ai Wei Wei (amazing, by the way!). Right outside, there is the "Topography of Terror", an outdoor/indoor museum regarding the history of Germany during the Nazi regime.

Depois de andarmos por todo o Mitte e de comprarmos coisinhas bonitas, voltámos à Alexanderplatz para ver alguns dos principais pontos turísticos de Berlim. Caminhámos por toda a rua Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, que se conecta com a avenida Unter den Linden, e conseguimos ver a linda Catedral ("Berliner Dom" em Alemão) e o enorme parque logo ao lado - Lustgarten - que estava obviamente cheio de gente, afinal o tempo estava fantástico! Continuámos a andar e chegámos à Brandenburger Tor, o portão da cidade e um dos principais marcos da Alemanha! Junto a ele, encontrámos o Holocaust Memorial (ou Memorial aos Judeus mortos na Europa). Fomos até ao Museu Martin Gropius Bau, que detém actualmente uma exposição de Ai Wei Wei (fantástico, já agora!). Mesmo ao lado, está o "Topography of Terror", um Museu ao ar livre/interno sobre a história da Alemanha durante o regime Nazi. 

Dinner & Summary

Since we were still in the Mitte area, we decided to stay there for dinner. During our day walk, we found a really cool street with loads of restaurants, really packed, which made us understand how good they were. So we went to Alte Schönhauser Straße (the amazing street), and we had dinner in Mädchenitaliener, a really cool Italian restaurant. It's small and friendly, difficult if you don't have a reservation, which we didn't have so we had to eat by the counter in front of the kitchen, but we didn't mind at all because we could see this place was really cool! The menu was in English and the food was amazing, they have a small menu with really nice pastas, dessert and drinks. Great price and great atmosphere! After dinner we got the metro in Weinmeisterstraße and went back to the house. Today we flew back to Brussels.

Já que estávamos na zona do Mitte, decidimos ficar por lá para jantar. Durante a nossa caminhada, encontrámos uma rua muito fixe com imensos restaurantes, super lotados, o que nos fez entender que eram realmente bons! Por isso fomos até Alte Schönhauser Straße (a rua fantástica) e jantámos no Mädchenitaliener, um restaurante Italiano genial. É pequeno e acolhedor, difícil se não se fizer reserva, e nós não tínhamos reserva por isso comemos ao balcão em frente à cozinha, mas nem nos importámos porque dava para ver que o restaurante era mesmo fantástico! O menu estava em inglês e a comida era belíssima, eles têm um menu pequeno com massas deliciosas, sobremesas e bebidas. O preço é óptimo e o ambiente também! Depois de jantar, apanhámos o metro em Weinmeisterstraße voltámos para a casa. Hoje, voámos de volta para Bruxelas.

So what can I say of this adventure? I really loved it, me and my friend had a lovely time! Berlin is an amazing city, with loads of gorgeous things to see! We didn't had that much time, I really want to come back again with more days to see everything better and see what I didn't manage to see. It's a very lively city, lots of young people, casual and grunge fashion on the streets, amazing shops, cute cafes (and I love cafes)! The German language is really complicated, I must say it was quite difficult to understand menus and signs, but fortunately English everyone understands! We were so lucky with the weather, so I really loved Berlin! Let's hope I can come back someday!

Então, que posso dizer desta aventura? Eu adorei mesmo, eu e a minha amiga passámos um belo tempo! Berlim é uma cidade fantástica, com imensas coisas lindas para ver! Não tivemos muito tempo, eu quero mesmo voltar de novo com mais dias para ver tudo melhor e ver o que não consegui ver. É uma cidade muito animada, com muitos jovens, moda casual e "grunge" nas ruas, lojas geniais, cafés amorosos (e eu adoro cafés)! A língua Alemã é muito complicada, devo dizer que foi bastante difícil entender menus e sinais, mas felizmente o Inglês praticamente toda a gente percebe! Tivemos muita sorte com o tempo, por isso gostei imenso de Berlim! Esperemos que eu consiga lá voltar algum dia!
